London: Jonathan Cape, 1960. First Impression, Binding A, PRESENTATION copy. Pp.252. Publisher's black cloth-effect paper over boards with eye motif stamped in white to the upper cover, titled in gilt to the spine, in pictorial dust-wrapper illustrated by Richard Chopping. Text block toned, some browning to extremities and spine panel, the condition being commensurate with a hot climate. A very good copy housed in an elegant quarter leather clamshell box. This is a presentation copy from Ian Fleming's literary agent Peter Janson-Smith (1922-2016) on behalf of the author, as stated on a specially printed certificate affixed to the flyleaf, completed in the hand of Janson-Smith prior to publication and subsequently signed by him in my presence (in 2008). He explained that these special copies were destined for Cape's Colonial offices in recognition of their overseas sales efforts. Whilst several must have existed, I am aware of just two such examples, the other being a presentation 'Goldfinger' which resides in the Ian Fleming Bibliographical Archive. An important copy.
