London: John Murray, 1900. [Literary biography] FINELY BOUND. Large octavo (23 x 16cm), pp.874. Illustrated with engravings. Contemporary full red morocco by R. Grant & Son, Edinburgh, with raised bands, full gilt backs, seal of Fettes College stamped in gilt to upper, a.e.g., marbled endpapers. Armorial bookplate of William John Lee to pastedown, contents very clean, binding slightly rubbed at joints and extremities. Near fine. Prize style binding from Fettes College, an independent boarding school in Edinburgh. In fiction, Ian Fleming's James Bond, like his father Andrew Bond, attends the school after his expulsion from Eton College following 'girl trouble' with a maid. At Fettes, Bond excels as an athlete, fighting twice for the school as a light-weight and, by the time of departure, had founded the first serious judo class at a British public school. A real life Commander James Bond RNVR, a frogman with the Special Boat Service, appears in the Fettes school registry. This copy is from the Ian Fleming Bibliographical Archive assembled by Jon Gilbert (pencil signature within). His comprehensive guide to the works of Ian Fleming (2012) won the 16th Breslauer Prize for bibliography. Item #67552
